🎓 IUSB Entrepreneurship Certificate Program

What’s happening:
A flexible, hands-on entrepreneurship certificate from the IUSB Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship designed to turn ideas into action.

Why it matters:
Participants gain practical, innovation-driven skills – from ideation and business models to AI marketing, startup law, and investor relations – without committing to a for-credit program.

What to expect:

• 13 two-hour workshops (Feb – April) covering everything from creative problem solving to financial literacy
• Real-world experience through role-playing simulations and curated networking with founders, investors, and ecosystem partners
• Open to all majors, community members, and working professionals

💻 Digital Storefront Program: Applications Open

What’s happening:
Applications are now open for the South Bend Code Works 2026 Digital Storefront Program, offering technology grants to for-profit businesses in St. Joseph County, Indiana.

Why it matters:
This program helps local businesses build or strengthen their online presence – whether starting from scratch or scaling existing digital tools.

The details:

• Open to for-profit businesses only (sorry – no nonprofits, franchises, or past awardees)
• Funds support digital presence enhancements – but not social media marketing or hardware
• Clear, thoughtful applications are encouraged – this is the selection committee’s first impression

🧬 Indiana Launches Crossroads Health Ventures Fund

What’s happening:
Governor Mike Braun announced the launch of Crossroads Health Ventures (CHV), a new early-stage venture fund focused on accelerating Indiana-based life sciences startups.

Why it matters:
Access to early capital is critical for turning research into real companies. CHV fills a key funding gap – helping startups scale, create high-wage jobs, and keep innovation rooted in Indiana.

The details:

• More than $21 million secured from public and private partners
• Backed by leaders including Lilly Ventures, Corteva, Elanco, Indiana University, Parkview Health, and the State of Indiana
• Capital deployment begins early 2026

Indiana ranks #1 in the nation for life sciences exports. CHV strengthens the state’s “One Health” economy – advancing innovation across human, animal, and plant health while reinforcing Indiana’s global leadership in life sciences.

🛠️ Indiana Technical Assistance Program (INTAP)

What’s happening:
INTAP is now accepting interest from small Indiana businesses seeking up to $15,000 in professional and technical services to support growth-oriented projects.

Why it matters:
INTAP fills skill and expertise gaps – helping businesses execute meaningful improvements without taking on new assets or overhead.

Eligible projects include:

• R&D and product prototyping
• Technology or software development
• Operations and inventory systems
• IP legal assistance or SBIR/STTR grant prep

Important notes:
Projects must be completed between July – December 2026 and cannot include asset purchases, general maintenance, or digital marketing.

🧭 Funding & Programs Update

What’s open:

• Export Indiana Accelerator Program (EIAP): A 12-week, no-cost export growth program helping Hoosier small businesses expand into global markets. Applications close March 7, 2026.

What’s coming:

• Community Collaboration Fund (CCF): The 2026 matching grant program launches soon, supporting collaborative projects that strengthen Indiana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Applications open February 2 and close March 2 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
• FAST Partnership Program: Technical assistance providers have been selected and onboarding is underway. More details on SBIR/STTR support, schedules, and client intake will be shared soon.

Why it matters:
From export readiness to ecosystem-building grants and federal R&D support, these programs represent key pathways for Hoosier businesses and communities to grow – now and in the months ahead.

🚀 STARTedUP Challenge: Applications Open

What’s happening:
The STARTedUP Challenge – Indiana’s statewide high school pitch competition – is back, giving students the chance to turn ideas into real-world solutions.

Why it matters:
Students don’t need a business background – just curiosity. The challenge builds confidence, clarity, and career-ready skills while helping students explore what excites them and what’s next after high school.

What students gain:

• Scholarships for eligible pitches
• Guided curriculum and resources to develop ideas and discover passions
• Real-world experience pitching to professionals
• Standout projects for college applications and internship resumes

How it works:

• Teams of up to three students
• Regional winners earn $1,000 per team member
• Focus on public speaking, problem-solving, leadership, and creativity

🏆 The headline: We’re a Mira Awards finalist

Why it matters: Startup South Bend – Elkhart has been named a finalist for the Mira Award for Community Impact, recognizing our work to strengthen the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem by connecting founders to capital, amplifying local stories, and creating inclusive pathways to innovation across Northern Indiana.

It’s an honor: Other regional finalists include PatientX for the BioCrossroads Life Sciences Innovation Award, DoorBlockade for the Conexus Manufacturing Innovation Award and the IDEA Center at the University of Notre Dame as Innovation Service Partner of the Year.

🥤 Coca-Cola Invests $2.5M in Underserved Entrepreneurs
Coca-Cola has awarded a $2.5 million grant to the University of Notre Dame’s Urban Poverty and Business Initiative (UPBI) to support underserved entrepreneurs. The funding will enhance UPBI’s programs aimed at fostering economic empowerment and business growth in marginalized communities.

HustleSBE is back with a new format! HustleSBE is moving to a workshop model, to foster peer connections amongst business owners and support accountability between participants. We are always excited to see who from our region is included in the Indiana Entrepreneurship Yearbook! The IEDC is currently working on the fourth edition and accepting nominations for the 2025 yearbook through May 4. Any nominations received after that date will be considered for 2026. Small Biz Ignite 

Ivy Tech South Bend is celebrating National Entrepreneurship Week with Small Biz Ignite—an entrepreneurship-focused event designed to empower, educate, and connect small business owners, students, and the community! Happening February 20th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the South Bend Campus Café, workshops will include Small Business Leveraging AI, Securing Bank Funding for Your Business, Branding for Business Success and more!

Marshall County Pitch Challenge

Marshall County is getting its first pitch competition, happening Sept. 26 at Plymouth’s REES Theatre! McCloskey Winners

Congratulations to all the winners at the 24^th McCloskey New Venture Competition! Close to $600,000 in cash and in-kind/pitch for investment prizes were awarded at the finals on Friday, April 26^th. Medical device startup VisiLocate took home the top prize with technology that aims to improve breast cancer surgery outcomes. Door Jack won the Startup South Bend – Elkhart Best Community Venture Award. McCloskey Winners

Congratulations to all the winners at the 24^th McCloskey New Venture Competition! Close to $600,000 in cash and in-kind/pitch for investment prizes were awarded at the finals on Friday, April 26^th. Medical device startup VisiLocate took home the top prize with technology that aims to improve breast cancer surgery outcomes. Door Jack won the Startup South Bend – Elkhart Best Community Venture Award. The company developed an easy-to-use, fire-code compliant secondary locking device for schools, universities, and other buildings during threat situations. Learn more and see all the winners here.

Midwest Startups Midwest Madness

South Bend has made it to the Sweet 16 in Midwest Startups Midwest Madness! After taking down Green Bay, Wisc., and Rochester, Minn., in Rounds 1 and 2, Cinderella South Bend is up against State College, Penn. Voting for this round ends at 11.59 p.m. on April 3 – So be sure to vote!

Community Collaboration Fund applications are open!

The Community Collaboration Fund (CCF) application is officially OPEN for business! Applications will be accepted through Friday, May 3, 2024.

This grant supports collaborations for Entrepreneur Support Organizations (ESOs) who are serving Indiana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Grant awards range from $5K – $40K for projects in the areas of entrepreneur education, connection, and acceleration. This is an excellent opportunity for ESOs build partnerships, cross municipal and county lines, and strategically support entrepreneurs throughout our state. Apply here.

SCORE Volunteers Needed

SCORE is a nonprofit resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration that helps aspiring and existing entrepreneurs succeed. They help thousands of entrepreneurs achieve their dreams of starting small businesses and achieving new levels of success.

Our North Central Indiana chapter needs business mentors to share their knowledge with small business owners. As a SCORE mentor, you’ll assist clients in developing business plans, help clients solve problems, and provide them with resources to make their businesses more efficient. Additionally, you may discover new sources of insight and knowledge to help your own business and professional growth-while helping your local community.

This isn’t just any program—it’s a community of minds eager to create, learn, and make a significant impact. As we prepare for our next Startup Moxie cohort, the excitement is mounting. What sets this year apart? An enriched curriculum featuring the RISE Idea to Revenue™ experience, new engaging local speaker sessions, and the integration of cutting-edge entrepreneurial AI tools.

If you know a student ready to embark on an entrepreneurial adventure that challenges, inspires, and molds them into a future leader and changemaker, encourage them to apply today! Make Startups Executive Fellowship Program

Marty Mechtenberg has been named part of the inaugural cohort of the Make Startups Executive Fellowship (MSEF) Program. This exclusive initiative, aimed at elevating the impact potential and operational capacity of entrepreneurship support, ecosystem building, and economic development organizations, is a meticulously crafted six-month intensive program designed to empower executives in their respective fields through two in-person immersions, bi-weekly online training sessions, one-on-one advising, peer coaching, and local field-building initiatives.

HustleSBE Applications Now Open!

HustleSBE applications are now open! We are holding two cohorts in 2024 – the first is happening April 30 to June 25 in St. Joseph County, with cohort 8 kicking off in the fall in Elkhart County. This bootcamp is for Minority and Female business owners who are focused on exploring innovative solutions for their customers, generating new ideas, and shoring up current business practices to create a solid foundation upon which to grow. The curriculum is responsive to the needs of the participants, with topics including business model canvas, access to capital, and growth strategies.

Funding Opportunity

The Community Collaboration Fund (CCF) is a program designed to inspire new collaborations between Entrepreneur Support Organizations to serve Indiana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and fill gaps. CCF awards grants between $5K – $40K for projects in the areas of entrepreneur education, connection, and acceleration. Applicants are required to provide 25% match.

2023 was a momentous year for the entrepreneur ecosystem in the South Bend – Elkhart region! Here at Startup South Bend – Elkhart, we shared so many stories of entrepreneurs – here’s some of the ones you found most popular.

Rooted & Reaching

The Rooted & Reaching podcast debuted in March, and over the course of 17 episodes, we featured a variety of entrepreneurs from around the region. Each episode is available in both audio and video, so here is the most popular episode in each format:

The most downloaded audio was episode three with guest Paul Anthony of OpStart, a South Bend-based company managing accounting, finance, and other back-office functions for startups. Paul talked about his background in venture capital and how deviating from the traditional career path can bring value to your life and your community. He also discusses the unique ethos of South Bend and the vast opportunity it presents for successful and impactful startups.

The most watched video featured Kevin Craig, Chief Executive Officer at Tessellated, a company developing high-strength polymer films in partnership with The University of Notre Dame. Kevin shares his journey from the Air Force to working with Tessellated to create graphene. He also discusses how military veterans have the same skill set as entrepreneurs: being able to be decisive in the face of imperfect information and the ability to get punched in the face and keep moving forward.

Startup Features

The two most viewed Startup Features on the website were so close in numbers, we’d be remiss to not mention both. First up is Ray Fraser of VitalView Technologies. The VitalView sensor platform monitors fluid build-up in congestive heart failure patients from home. This sensor sits in one of two places – underneath the patient’s mattress or on the wall and takes a daily reading of the body’s fluid levels, identifying changes over time. Ray’s family inspires his work – his brother lives with class 2 congestive heart failure.

Alex Sejdinaj of South Bend Code School, South Bend Code Works & Give Grove thought she was meant for the medical field, but discovered while in college at the University of Notre Dame that her talents were meant for a different calling – coding. Alex finds the three different organizations she co-founded all fall under one main goal: growing accessibility to technology.

Hustle Highlight

The most viewed HustleSBE Highlight was a profile on Cohort 5 graduate Rachel Mospan. Rachel’s firm, Rachel Mospan Designs, focuses on low waste, sustainable, or eco-friendly design services. She overcame doubts of starting her own design firm – with no MBA or design training – with skill, grit and a unique vision. She has since gone on to co-own Herstoric Development, rehabilitating the Monarch Building in South Bend.

Innovate WithIN is a free student competition sponsored by the State of Indiana’s StartedUp Foundation. Each team who wins their region will receive seed funding to continue growing their company and the top three teams at the State Finals will receive additional funds with first place receiving $25,000! Letter from Marty

It’s a fantastic feeling to wrap up a busy 2023, and I’m excited to share my observations from my first 90 days in my new role as Director of Entrepreneurship Ecosystems for the South Bend – Elkhart region:

The Energy is Infectious: The enthusiasm for entrepreneurship in our region is palpable. Events like Founder Factory, IDEA Week, SPARK, Hustle, and Entrepreneurship and Adversity showcase the genuine excitement for learning and engaging in entrepreneurship.

Abundant Resources: We are fortunate to have a wealth of resources available. While it’s challenging to list them all, organizations like the ISBDC, our Chambers, RISE, CDFI Friendly SB (check out our website for a full list) are working tirelessly to support entrepreneurs at all stages, providing access to capital, mentorships, and technical assistance.

Challenges Exist: Despite the positives, it’s important to acknowledge the hurdles we face. This past year was tough for venture capital, and not everyone has been able to access the resources they require. Bridging the gap from learning to practical implementation remains a significant challenge.

Remarkable Connectivity: Our region boasts unparalleled connectivity. I challenge any other region in the state to surpass our alignment of local businesses, local government, higher and secondary education, workforce development, and engaged community members. This collaboration extends beyond our borders, with external partners at the state level also involved.

The IDEA Center at the University of Notre Dame and High Alpha recently announced the 1842 Fund, which aims to further the university’s mission through purpose-driven startups. We are excited about this year’s keynote speaker. Lisa Sun is founder and CEO of fashion brand GRAVITAS. Lisa started GRAVITAS in 2012, after 11 years at McKinsey & Company advising luxury, fashion and beauty brands and retailers in the U.S., Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Inspired by her first professional review, in which she was told she ‘lacked gravitas,’ Lisa developed her clothing line with a focus on size-inclusivity and confidence-building through fashion. Awesome Fund Pitch Competition – Apply Now!

Want to hear something awesome? We are partnering with the South Bend Awesome Fund for Founder Factory ‘23! They will be joining us for a special entrepreneur-focused pitch competition. The Awesome Fund is dedicated to supporting people, ideas, businesses, and causes that make the South Bend area even more awesome through quarterly micro-grant awards. Especially for Founder Factory, this quarter the focus is on startups and entrepreneurs and the grants are $3,500 – up from the usual $1,000! Three winners will be selected with the awards announced at the networking reception.

Applications are open for entrepreneurs and small business to apply to participate in the competition. A minimum of eight startups will be selected to participate in the live pitch and Q&A session. To learn about the program and apply, click here. Deadline is Nov. 8!

Celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week with the IEDC
Founder Factory will close out with a special Global Entrepreneurship Week party, hosted by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation! The networking reception includes the regional debut of the 2023 Entrepreneurship Indiana Yearbook, which spotlights founders from around the state. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet honorees, learn more about the new ConnectIND entrepreneurship portal and enjoy the company of the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Capital Highlight: Indiana Angel Network Fund

The Indiana Angel Network Fund – or IANF – supports seed investment in Indiana-based companies. These companies typically either are pre-revenue or actively pursuing product-market fit through initial go-to-market activities. For life sciences companies, investment targets are usually seeking financing to complete preclinical activities to either prepare for clinical studies or submit for regulatory approval. South Bend-based INVANTI invests in founders from small cities to help startups overcome “kitchen-table” problems. Through a selective studio model, their team is hands-on in helping founders evolve from a pre-idea to pilot, starting with a three-month part-time program. Capital Highlight: STTR

Along with its sister program SBIR, the Small Business Technology Program (STTR) is known as America’s Seed Fund. Both programs encourage small businesses to explore their technological potential and provide the incentive to profit from its commercialization, but STTR requires the small business to formally partner with a non-profit research institute, such as a university. This week, we celebrated the graduation of HustleSBE Cohort Six! These entrepreneurs come from a variety of industries across the South Bend – Elkhart region. This eight-session business bootcamp is dedicated to bringing resources on topics including capital, certifications, financial management, and human resources to minority and women-owned businesses. Elevate Ventures is a venture development organization focused on building sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship cultures in regions throughout Indiana, fostering and developing high-potential, high-growth businesses for investment and returns for stakeholders. Its virtual training program, Elevate Origins, teaches aspirational entrepreneurs the steps venture capital firms and venture studios take to ideate and form business ideas through vetting business ideas via customer discovery activities, and ultimately building a pitch deck to attract co-founders and early investors. Elevate Ventures’ Community Ideation Fund enables ideation-stage high-potential companies to move closer to a specific, measurable technology or product development milestone with an investment between $5,000 and $20,000. Eligible applicants include Indiana-based companies with headquarters in communities under a partnership with Elevate Ventures, and who have no more than $50,000 in trailing revenue over the past 12-month period. Capital Highlight: McCloskey New Venture Competition

The McCloskey New Venture Competition is a signature event in the innovation ecosystem at the University of Notre Dame. It serves as an opportunity to test the validity of ideas and innovations and allows students to develop skills directly transferable to the commercial market. The competition is open to all current students from the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s, as well as faculty and staff, alumni, and local community leaders. Participants are encouraged as entrepreneurs to create presentation and pitch decks, receive mentorship, serve as team leaders, and compete for prizes that include resources and funding. The competition strengthens startup skills by providing participants with insight from mentors and judges that includes a mix of angel investors, venture capitalists, successful entrepreneurs, and other startup experts. Applications are open for HustleSBE Cohort 6! This business bootcamp is looking for Minority and Female business owners that already have a least a year in business and who are focused on exploring new solutions for their customers, generating new ideas, and shoring up current business practices to create a solid foundation upon which to grow. Applications close March 20^th!

This month’s HUSTLESBE Grad Feature is Brenda Lane. Brenda’s sense of style inspired her to leave the healthcare industry and open her own boutique specializing in high-quality fashions on a budget. ESO Feature: Spark Entrepreneurship Institute
Saint Mary’s College and the Spark Business Accelerator has helped launch over 90 women-owned businesses since 2011. This summer, the program will partner with RISE to offer entrepreneurial summer camps for young aspiring female entrepreneurs. The Spark Startup Day Camp runs from July 10-14 for girls entering grades 4-8, and the Spark Entrepreneurship Institute, a residential program for entrepreneurially-minded young women entering grades 9-12, happens from July 16-21. Scholarships are available and if you register your student before March 31^st, you will get a $50 early bird discount!

Capital Highlight: Digital Storefront Program

The Digital Storefront Program is designed to distribute technology grants to regional for-profit businesses to create or enhance their online presence. Whether they have no current online presence, are just starting to employ more digital capabilities, or are seeking more advanced support, Code Works is here to help. The grant covers the cost of technology assistance and maintenance for six months, making it an ideal solution for any small business in need of a boost. The Digital Storefront program will run from 2023 to the end of 2025, and Code Works will open application windows periodically as they complete projects. Apply here.

A Note from Aidan

Hello! I have had the opportunity to meet so many entrepreneurs doing creative and exciting things in the South Bend – Elkhart region during my time with Startup South Bend – Elkhart. I wanted to personally let you know my last day with the organization is March 17.  This certainly does not mean I’m leaving the region’s entrepreneurs behind. I’ve taken a position with the Indiana Economic Development Corp., helping develop and build their new statewide entrepreneur support initiatives. I expect to keep in touch and will continue to work to support our region’s amazing startups! My current role has been  should you know a great candidate for the South Bend – Elkhart Regional Partnership team!
